This magnificent Colheita celebrates its 40th birthday this year with extravagant, fruitcake-like perfumes mingled with the dust and sackcloth notes of long lodge ageing. In the mouth, it is vital, yet rich and lavish too, with the sweetness of fig and raisin melting softly into dried apricot and peach-skin fruit essences. It is full in texture (much fuller than an equivalent 40 Year Old Tawny is likely to be) thanks to its ageing trajectory. This is choice, deft and still generous in girth, despite its time-burnished refinements. Drink 2019-2023. (Best in Show) – DWWA 2019

Today, the varied terroir and climate across Portugal allows a great range of wines to be made each year, from the fresh and dry Vinho Verde wines to the famous and widely drunk fortified Port wines, and many in between.

The magnificent city of Porto - the capital of Portugal - is located near the mouth of the beautiful Douro river, in the beating heart of the Douro wine region. The Douro region has been regarded as one of the most important viticultural region of Europe for several centuries, and was the third region to be officially recognized and protected as a wine region, with laws having been passed in the mid 18th century regarding its status. Porto is, of course, most famous for the production of Port wine, an aromatic and slightly viscous tawny colored fortified wine, with a fascinating history of seafaring, experimentation and innovation. The vineyards used in the region for the production of Porto's wines contain up to a hundred different grape varietals, resulting in the wide range of Port wines on offer today.

Winery Notes

A Touriga Nacional-based blend of traditional Douro red varieties, grown on schist-sandstone soils at 600 meters of elevation. Tawny wines are aged oxidatively in barrel, and typically blend multiple vintages together to achieve the desired age character. Colheitas, on the other hand, are tawny wines made from a single harvest. Kopke ages their Colheitas in oak barrels for periods of time that can vary, but never less than 7 years. They are bottled from cask as the market dictates.
