The NV 50 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in May 2022 with 134 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. This is an entrant in the new age-indicated category of 50; it no longer stops at 40. I thought the 50 Year white was fabulous. Its Tawny brother is as good or better. It doesn’t have the brightness of the white in terms of acidity (the fruit doesn’t taste old in terms of decay, so don’t misunderstand), but it is richer, lusher and more flavorful. There’s a touch of nuts, caramel and spice. It also has a long, long finish, which is what I would expect from an old Tawny in top form. Kopke did a great job with the blend here. This is completely delicious, smooth and balanced, juicy on the finish. Which is better? Depends on what you like, and it is worth getting some of each. For wines this old, the prices are reasonable. They are both great experiences.

The magnificent city of Porto - the capital of Portugal - is located near the mouth of the beautiful Douro river, in the beating heart of the Douro wine region. The Douro region has been regarded as one of the most important viticultural region of Europe for several centuries, and was the third region to be officially recognized and protected as a wine region, with laws having been passed in the mid 18th century regarding its status. Porto is, of course, most famous for the production of Port wine, an aromatic and slightly viscous tawny colored fortified wine, with a fascinating history of seafaring, experimentation and innovation. The vineyards used in the region for the production of Porto's wines contain up to a hundred different grape varietals, resulting in the wide range of Port wines on offer today.

Fifty years, as many readers will know, is a long time, but in the painstaking scholastic environment of a Port lodge those five decades serve as an education in harmony, serenity and sumptuousness. This dark walnut wine, with its scents of vanilla pod, moist cigar leaf, barleysugar sticks and quince paste, is the proof. It doesn’t have the shattering evaporative concentration of our Best In Show Amontillado – or perhaps it’s that the natural sweetness of this wine serves to coat time’s aggression with velvet. Concentrated it is, though, with lusciously layered flavours of strawberry and kirsch, of tobacco and caramel, of toasted almond and demerara sugar lent balance by light tannins and a discreet strawberry-juice acidity. No ancient wine would be easier to sip than this gracious and satisfying semi-centenarian. (Best In Show) - DWWA 2024
