Varietal

Malvasia

Malvasia is an ancient and diverse grape family that produces a wide range of white, red, and sweet wines. Originating from the Mediterranean, Malvasia has been cultivated for centuries, with notable plantings in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. The most common variety, Malvasia Bianca, is widely used in both dry and sweet white wines, known for their aromatic richness and complexity. What makes Malvasia unique is its expressive aromatics and versatility. Dry Malvasia wines are typically floral and fruity, offering notes of white peach, apricot, citrus, honeysuckle, and almond, often with a slight oily texture. Sweeter styles, such as Malvasia delle Lipari, Malmsey Madeira, and Malvasia-based Vin Santo, develop honeyed, caramelized, and nutty flavors balanced by refreshing acidity. Malvasia thrives in warm, coastal regions, where its bright acidity and aromatic depth make it a fantastic pairing for seafood, creamy cheeses, and Mediterranean cuisine, offering wine lovers a rich and diverse tasting experience.

Country

Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Region

Emilia-Romagna

Emilia-Romagna is one of Italy's best loved wine regions, and this northern region of one of the world's great wine countries has been associated with fine wine making and superb viticulture for an astonishing length of time. Indeed, wine has most probably been made in Emilia-Romagna for almost three thousand years, and as one might imagine, such an ancient and respected wine region remains today deeply traditional and proud, with wineries determined to protect the region's status and reputation as a region of quality and distinction. With twenty-two DOC's, and two DOCG's, Emilia-Romagna is very much a home of quality wines, and there is a fairly even percentage of red wine and white wine grapes being grown in the region's expansive and beautiful vineyards.

Vinous Media

The NV Vino da Uve Appassite Vino del Volta, a varietal Malvasia Candia Aromatica, entrances with a bouquet of honeyed florals, burnt orange peels, sun tea and peach preserves. This glides across the palate with ease, pleasantly sweet yet harmonious throughout. Citrus-tinged orchard fruits give way to white raisins and confectionary spice. This finishes long and unexpectedly fresh yet potent. Fig and mango nuances are offset by candied lime. Wow, simply wow! Place the Vino del Volta on your bucket list of Italian dessert wines.

Winery Notes

100% Malvasia di Candia Aromatica. From 30-50-year-old estate vines, farmed organically and harvested by hand. The bunches are picked at normal ripeness and only in perfect health, then dried in the sun for 5-15 days. They are pressed in a by hand in a torchio (a small vertical basket press) and fermented naturally with native yeasts in barrel. The wine is aged in used barrique for around 3 years, followed by 2 more years in bottle. The Vino da Uve Appassite classification does not permit the variety or vintage on the label; the wine is pure Malvasia from a single vintage. "Volta" is the surname of the farmworker who tended these vines for years.
