There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. A linear and rather tight red with some berry, crushed-stone and bark character. Medium body, firm tannins and a slightly austere finish. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet sauvignon. Give it two or three years to soften.

88-90 Composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Chantegrive has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and notes of stewed black and red plums, black raspberries and damp soil, plus hints of tapenade and black truffles with a waft of bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing, delivering a good amount of crunchy red and black fruits and a soft texture, finishing with an herbal lift.

The 2020 Chantegrive is a powerful, driving wine. I very much like the energy here, along with the savory/earthy profile. Ultimately, though, the 2020 feels a bit narrow in its construction. There's just enough mid-palate depth and fruit here. A burst of red fruit mixed with sweet floral accents brightens up the finish to make this quite complete. Even so, my impression is that there is greater potential to tap. Tasted two times.
