The beautifully and unforgettable French region of Cote De Beaune has been revered throughout the centuries, and recognized as one of the key producer's of the world's finest white wines. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

A pure, elegant and nicely perfumed if still relatively primary nose offers up mostly notes of various red berries, earth and spice nuances that are trimmed in just a touch of wood. The intense, sleek and muscular yet relatively refined broad-shouldered flavors possess superb volume and almost breathtaking power on the explosive and mouth coating finish. This is a classic Corton yet consistent with the style of the 2010 vintage, it not especially rustic, indeed the tannins, while firm, are comparatively sophisticated. A knock out by any standard but at the same time, a wine for the patient though with the right foods, this could actually be enjoyed, infanticide though that might be.

Good medium red with a hint of amber at the rim. At once more sedate and more expressive on the nose than the 2011, offering aromas of plum, red cherry, curry powder, cinnamon and tobacco (the iron element in the soil is apparent). A step up in both sweetness and energy in the mouth, with its penetrating red fruit flavors intensified by white pepper, soil notes and terrific salty minerality. Wonderfully seamless and fine-grained yet sharply delineated and gripping too, and subtly perfumed from start to finish. Really reverberates on the slowly rising finish, which displays terrific spicy lift. This beauty boasts a superb backbone of tannins and minerality to support a long evolution in bottle--and perhaps ultimately an even higher score. A compelling vin de terroir from vines whose roots are in the chalk, this bottling should ultimately merit an even higher score. (13.4% alcohol; 3.4 pH; 3.75 g/l acidity; 38 h/h)

Winery Notes

Ruby red in colour with clear purple reflections. The nose is powerful, concentrated and exudes notes of black cherry and spice. The palate is rich and smooth with good energy and concentration. The finish is elegant. An excellent wine for cellar ageing. Serve with: Seared foie gras with armagnac, game, quail, full-flavoured cheeses such as Cîteaux or Reblochon.
