There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

A consistent vintage from Giscours that shows minimal evolution, with just a hint of dusty berries and sweet tobacco leaves. Still quite primary on fruit, with berries, cassis, olives and a savory, spicy touch. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannins and a long, lightly peppery finish, showing a bit more paprika in the finish. Fresh and nothing green here. This is already drinking well but will hold well in the next eight plus years. A blend of 71% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot and 5% petit verdot. Drink or hold. Tasted in a vertical of 10 vintages.

Soft and a touch earth on the attack but pulls itself together to show firmly in-control tannins. There is a natural austerity offset by a clear punch of redcurrant, raspberry and autumnal fruits. Good freshness, softened by smoked cedar on the finish. Reminds me of an early stage 2011, and this wine in 2017 seems set to age just as gracefully in the end. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040.

The 2017 Giscours has a sense of airiness on the nose, well defined with rose petal, a touch of pencil shavings and more red fruit than the 2016. It unfolds nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It's not quite as pixelated or as precise as the previous vintage, but it's quite powerful for a 2017, with a very peppery, spicy finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. This is a fine Giscours.
