Moving to the two Cornas I was able to taste from this report, the 2018 Cornas Les Chailles comes from a mix of lieux-dits, including Combe, Les Saveaux, Cayret, Les Mazards, Chaillot, and Chapuzes. It was all destemmed and brought up in used barrels. Offering gorgeous notes of black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, game, lavender, and pepper, this is pure Cornas goodness on both the nose and palate. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with bright acidity, this complex, layered, beautifully balanced Cornas can be enjoyed any time over the coming 15-20 years. Count me impressed.

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Bright purple. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of ripe dark berries, licorice and pungent flowers pick up a floral nuance as the wine opens up. Plush cassis and blackberry flavors are braced by a spine of juicy acidity, and a cracked pepper flourish adds spicy cut to the back half. Becomes sweeter with air and features a hint of cola on the long, smoky finish, which features harmonious tannins and lingering florality.

A blend of several different parcels matured in older barrels, the 2018 Cornas les Chailles impresses for its distinct scents of crushed stone, red plums and red raspberries. Full-bodied and concentrated, it's nevertheless fresh and red fruited, with fine-grained tannins, a relatively open, generous feel and a gently tannic, softly dusty finish. It should drink well for at least another decade and possibly even improve over much of that time.

Subtle herbal notes underpin the raspberry and blackberry aromas. Soft, velvety, seductive and easy to enjoy. The acidity, alcohol and oak are all in place and in good harmony. A fresh and well-made expression of 2018 Cornas, this is well-balanced. Tannins are quite tempered and gentle for a Cornas, making for a satisfying early-drinking style. Vines with an average age of 40 years grown at the foot of the slope in lieux-dits Combe, Les Saveaux, Cayret, Les Mazards, Chaillot and Chapuzes. All destemmed, fermented in stainless steel then matured in barriques, with no new oak.
