The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

This has beautiful purity to the white nectarine, lychee, honeysuckle blossoms and star fruit. Reveals a thin layer of honey that drapes the palate, with ginger and shortbread adding richness. An elegant, stylish white, with racy acidity driving the long finish. Drink now through 2026. 420 cases made, 50 cases imported.

All barrel-fermented Grenache Blanc, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Clos du Belvedere is nevertheless very pale straw in color. Marked by subtle hints of pencil shavings and plenty of ripe pineapple fruit, it's medium to full-bodied, plump and fleshy on the palate, finishing long, crisp and mouthwatering, with hints of white pepper and wood spice. It's not the blockbuster the 2019 was, but it's still a terrific white Chateauneuf du Pape. Having also tried a couple of older vintages of this cuvée, I've widened the drinking window to reflect how well this wine can age.
