Beautiful nose of Amalfi lemon, candied lemon, vanilla and white flowers. Stunning combination of richness and vitality, the wine feeling light on the palate, in spite of the excellent concentration. Very long, mineral finish that displays wonderful silkiness. Drink or hold.

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

The beautifully and unforgettable French region of Cote De Beaune has been revered throughout the centuries, and recognized as one of the key producer's of the world's finest white wines. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

Slightly more prominent wood influence can be found on the slightly bright and more citrusy aromas of white orchard fruit, roasted nut and an array of floral wisps. Once again, the medium weight flavors are very generously proportion yet retain solid delineation thanks to the firm lemon-tinged acidity that maintains the balance on the solidly complex and highly persistent finale. Lovely.

The 2020 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru is well-defined with tangible tension on the nose, before becoming overtly floral with white flowers and dandelion emerging. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tension, quite intense with plenty of energy zinging through on the finish.

The 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes opens in the glass with aromas of pear, mint, honeycomb, baking spices and toasted bread. Medium to full-bodied, ample and rich, it's a fleshy, open-knit wine that concludes with an oak-inflected finish.

Winery Notes

At first sight, the wine is a perfect illustration of its place name. It is worthy of the wonderful Meursault whose colour is golden without being yellow. The nose, concentrated and elegant, full without being heady, evokes aromas of almond, warm bread just taken out of the oven, hot croissant, then, fine spice and finally grilled dried fruit. The flavours are at the same refined level as the aromas. The body is round without being heavy; the acidity is well integrated and is never biting. The texture feels like silk without the alcohol ever being dominant. The wine develops on the palate and opens up fully until the very long aftertaste brings back some of the precious aromas felt in the bouquet: almond paste and hot brioche.
