This rich wine has a good proportion (31%) of Cabernet Franc to give it a perfumed structured character. It is dense and with considerable tannins at this stage. By contrast, the fruit has enormous potential with rich blackberry and black-plum flavors. This chateau has made a considerable stride in this vintage. Drink from 2022.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2014 Quintus has a concentrated nose with pure red cherries, raspberry and cranberry scents laced with smoke and wet stone. This is fragrant and very appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, almost Burgundian in terms of purity. The oak is beautifully disguised and it is blessed with a wonderful, caressing lace-like finish that belies the persistence that comes through. This Quintus appears to have really blossomed over the last year. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2014 Château Quintus is a small step back from the 2015. Dense purple/plum colored, with terrific notes of currants, cassis, new leather, and toasted spices, this beauty shines on the palate and is medium to full-bodied, seamless, sexy, and ready to go. It’s already hard to resist but will keep for 10-15 years.

The 2014 Quintus was quite backward and tight-lipped when I tasted it from bottle: broody black cherries and black plum, a touch of clove and fresh mint eventually surfacing. The palate is silky smooth on the entry, a Saint Emilion that caresses and seduces the senses. It is very pure with lovely black cherry, blueberry and white pepper notes, although I would be seeking a little more structure and tension on the finish. It is a wine that goes out to give pleasure, but I hope there is more personality and terroir expression that will develop in the future.

A good depth of fruit but the oak does sit in on the nose and palate, leaving a charry edge. It's round and sweet with the tannins finely etched and the Cabernet Franc adding freshness on the finish. The yield was low, at 25hl/ha. It could be an interesting bottle if the oak finely integrates. Drinking Window 2021 - 2030.
