The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Very bright on the nose and palate, with a pure, steely touch integrating well with its lime, mineral and bread crust notes. Really energetic, chiseled and nervy, with a medium body and a chalky, mouthwatering finish. A touch of nuts at the end. Disgorged in 2025. 4 g/L dosage. Almost five years of lees aging. Delicious now.

Based on the 2016 vintage and disgorged in September 2019, the new release of Gosset’s NV Brut Grand Blanc de Blancs (which will arrive in the US later this year) unwinds in the glass with notes of citrus oil, warm biscuits, green apple and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, deep and tightly wound, it’s racy and incisive, with a bright spine of acidity, chalky structure and a long, penetrating finish. As ever, this cuvee emphasizes Chardonnay from the Montagne de Reims.

Light yellow-gold. Smoky, lees-accented pear and honeydew on the pungent nose, with hints of iodine and anise adding complexity. Juicy orchard and citrus fruit flavors tighten up in the mid-palate, showing very good clarity and thrust. The smoky quality repeats on the smooth, mineral-tinged finish, which clings with excellent focus and tenacity.
