Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

White pepper from the stems accentuates the fresh aromatics. Full-bodied, but again great freshness on the palate, with is underlined by the piercing acidity. Texturally deep, the tannins are just a little fibrous, but this has plenty of interest and personality. The stemminess might be a little too prominent for those who aren't a fan of whole-bunch fermentation. Sandy soils and aged in concrete.

I loved the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a pretty, nicely balanced, elegant 2020 offering lots of red and black fruits as well as some floral, rose, and garrigue-like nuances. With fine tannins, a supple, layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length, it’s well worth seeking out. The blend is almost all Grenache, brought up all in concrete tanks.

Virtually all Grenache from sandy sites, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape nevertheless lacks the intensely floral and complex aromas expected, revealing a more subdued countenance of black olives and black cherries. It's full-bodied and supple, turning silky on the finish.
