Caro 2021 is a refined, vigorous wine. It delivers cherry, berries such as redcurrants and blackberries and graphite, balanced by a layer of spice and oak. Expansive in the mouth, with a rich, refreshing acidity midway through, it transitions sharply to a savoury finish with fine, polished tannins. A blend of 79% Malbec with 21% Cabernet Sauvignon from three prominent terroirs in the Uco Valley – Paraje Altamira, San Pablo and Gualtallary. Aged for 18 months in barrels from DBR Lafite’s Tonnellerie des Domaines in Pauillac, Right now, it’s very pleasant paired with braised red meat.

The 2021 CARO, 79% Malbec and 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, is deep garnet-purple in color. It soars from the glass with expressive notes of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and licorice with hints of candied violets and spice cake. The full-bodied palate is jam packed with perfumed black fruits, framed by super-ripe, super-plush tannins and tantalizing freshness, finishing very long and fragrant. This is an impressive showing for this joint venture between Lafite Rothschild and Nicolas Catena.

Leads with notes of dried violet and clay before unfolding generous layers of berry and plum preserves. Baking spice and licorice notes weave in and out as this moves toward the finish around caressing tannins, with a late gush of berry fruit and twinges of graphite. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Better than previously reviewed. Drink now through 2035. 5,000 cases made, 100 cases imported.

Winery Notes

This wine has a dark, intense color, with hints of violet. The nose reveals a complex mix of aromas including raspberry, black pepper, violets, cloves and subtle notes of dark chocolate. On the palate the wine is well-balanced with a refreshing acidity and ripe tannins that contribute to the harmony and smoothness of the palate.
