There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The 2021 Hosanna is certainly one of the stronger efforts in Pomerol in this vintage. The bouquet comes racing out with ebullient black fruit that verges on too opulent (like I found some of the early vintages of Hosanna). Quite peppery and almost feral, touches of menthol come through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, showing plush black fruit laced with white pepper, thyme and graphite, the latter especially evident on the aftertaste. It does settle in the glass after 5 minutes—an impressive Pomerol considering the vintage.

A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Hosanna has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. With coaxing, it reluctantly gives up delicate scents of juicy plums and blackberries, followed by touches of cast-iron pan, cedar chest, and Sichuan pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate is plush with well-knit acidity supporting the elegantly styled black fruit flavors, finishing on a mineral note.
