The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

Brunello di Montalcino, an esteemed wine appellation in Tuscany, Italy, has been crafting exceptional red wines since its establishment in 1966. Focused exclusively on the Sangiovese grape, specifically the local Brunello clone, this region's unique terroir of warm, dry climate and well-drained soils imparts richness and complexity to the wines. The hallmark of Brunello is its extended aging, requiring a minimum of four years, with at least two spent in oak barrels. Black cherries, lavender, black mushrooms, lead pencil and violets on the nose. Full-bodied with a powerful and polished tannin structure that follows through to the very end. Pure, silky texture. Fascinating aftertaste of ripe fruit, yet it’s fresh and tense. Some orange peel, too. Glorious at the end. So well crafted and pointed. This needs another three to five years to integrate but already extremely impressive.

Showing an inky dark appearance and made with old-vine fruit, the Siro Pacenti 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne has a note of baked blackberry pie with the crust, raspberry preserves, barbecue smoke, cigar box and every other rather extreme aromatic description you could apply to a heavily barrique-aged red wine. It's overblown for sure, especially at this young age, but experience teaches us that Siro Pacenti's wines need time, lots of time, before all the elements fall into palace. The alcohol is registered at 15%, and there are jackhammer tannins to close. Some 22,000 bottles were made, and they should be put aside for another 10 years.

A darker expression of the vintage, this red sports black cherry, blackberry, iron, tar and tobacco aromas and flavors. Dense and muscular, yet with vibrant acidity that keeps this long and focused. The tannins are resonant, and the lasting impression is of sweet fruit. Best from 2026 through 2042. 1,700 cases made, 480 cases imported.

This flows across the palate with velvety textures complicated by tactile mineral tones and zesty acidity as cool-toned red and black fruits slowly saturate. A web of fine-grained tannins envelops the senses as the 2019 finishes dramatically long and staining, leaving traces of cedary spice and inner rose to linger on and on. This is a formidable VecchieVigne that will pay dividends in the cellar.

Bringing together fruit from Siro Pacenti’s 35-plus-year-old holdings in Montalcino’s northern and southern quadrants, Vecchie Vigne shows even greater intensity and power than the Pelagrilli bottling along with more nuance and sophistication. With a deep ruby hue, it offers a fascinating mix of grilled herbs, toasty cedar, incense and irony minerals. Deeply concentrated and full in its black fruit purity, the palate is laced with sweet herb and spice. Substantial, well-padded tannins are polished, dissolving slowly into a tactile powderiness on the long liquorice finish.

Winery Notes

Brick red in color with aromas of plum and cedar on the nose. The palate is full, with dense tannins and layered flavors of black licorice, fennel, and tobacco.
