There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. The 2003 Sassicaia is another shockingly beautiful wine. Rich, opulent and layered in the glass, the 2003 captures all the ripeness of this unrelentingly hot, dry year, and yet it does so with no excess at all. I admire the 2003's explosive energy and stunning balance. Location of key vineyards and the ability to blend across sites were clearly advantages in mitigating intense heat and lack of rain. Obviously the magnum format helps to a considerable degree. The 2023 spent 15 days on the skins followed by 24 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. Eye-opening.

The salinity comes through clearly at this point, which gives beautiful lift and grip. I just love how Sassicaia wines can play with tannins. They start so delicate and soft and yet close in beautifully. [...] The rosemary and heat-baked herbs of Tuscany stand shoulder to shoulder with a concentrated blackberry richness and a salty tang that delivers freshness. This is the magic of Bolgheri — the coastal influence and the old vines.

Lots of raspberry and cherry on the nose. Full-bodied and chunky with lots of fruit and a long, velvety finish. Hints of new wood. Big and juicy Sassicaia. Very well done for the vintage. Best after 2008.
