#96 in Top 100 World Wines, 2025. Extremely aromatic and floral, showing dried violets and blackberry and strawberry character. Full-bodied and creamy with very fine tannins that give a caressing, silky texture that is long and persistent. Exotic in many ways but so polished. A wine of contrasts. Made from old vines. 74% merlot and 26% cabernet franc. Drink after 2029.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Pomerol

Pomerol, a distinguished appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, stands as a vinous jewel celebrated for its exceptional Merlot-dominant red wines. What makes Pomerol unique is its relatively small size, allowing for an intimate focus on individual vineyards and an emphasis on artisanal winemaking. Unlike many Bordeaux regions, Pomerol does not have a formal classification system, placing the spotlight on each estate's intrinsic quality and distinct terroir. Merlot thrives in Pomerol's clay-rich soils, crafting wines of opulence, velvety texture, and alluring plum and black cherry notes. Iconic châteaux like Pétrus and Le Pin showcase the pinnacle of Pomerol's winemaking prowess. The absence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends further accentuates the appellation's uniqueness. Pomerol wines are revered for their approachability in youth and the ability to evolve gracefully over time, exemplifying the timeless elegance and allure of this exceptional Bordeaux appellation.

A riper, full-bodied, sexy Hosanna, the 2022 Château Hosanna checks in as 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc, coming from a tiny 4.5 hectares of blue clay soils on the upper plateau in Pomerol. Ripe blackberries, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and graphite notes all define the aromatics, and it has a wealth of fruit, a rich, unctuous mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a blockbuster finish. Its tannins are just about completely covered by its massive fruit, but this will benefit from 7-8 years of bottle age (you'll be excused for drinking a bottle today) and have three decades of longevity.

The 2022 Hosanna is gorgeous, perhaps a bit more stern than it can be, but nevertheless compelling. Beams of tannin give the 2022 its lifted, statuesque feel. Dark blue fruits, espresso, incense, licorice, lavender and dried herbs saturate the palate. As always, Hosanna is a dramatic Pomerol and yet the 2022 is not as bombastic as it can be. The 2022 was done with no punchdowns or pumpovers, just a gentle rinsing of the cap, at lower temperatures than normal. That approach paid off big time.

Fragrant cherries and rose scents on the nose. Crushed velvet in texture, this has bounce and intensity with fleshy, dark fruit and cooling acidity. It's certainly got a sense of Pomerol plushness as well as clear strength but it's so effortlessly presented with tannins that melt away and a lingering minty liquorice flavour that is so delightful. A fantastic Hosanna, grippy, seductive and moreish but still with an element of playfulness in the touches of sweet fruit and juicy acidity.

This really delivers on the mouthfeel, with a wonderfully polished and creamy profile to its plum, black cherry and blackberry compote flavors. Inlaid seamlessly with sweet tobacco and singed anise, this glides beautifully through the long finish. As the fruit drips, there's a late echo of warm earth. A beauty. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2040.

Aromas of blackberries and plums mingled with notions of anise, licorice, chocolate fudge and cigar wrapper introduce the 2022 Hosanna, a full-bodied, rich and layered wine that's ripe and unctuous, with a sweet core of sun-kissed fruit and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully firm finish.
