Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento bursts from the glass with an exciting array of sweet dark cherries, flowers, mint and licorice. All of the elements are in the right place. The 2006 combines power and finesse to a degree I have seldom experienced in the Col d’Orcia wines. Layers of fruit flow through to the huge, authoritative finish. Readers will be tempted to try the 2006 young, and so will I, to tell the truth. Although I would love to be wrong, the reality is that the 2006 isn’t likely to be at its peak until age 20 or so. This is a fantastic showing from Col d’Orcia. Anticipated maturity: 2026-2046.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Vento Riserva starts to show tertiary nuances as dusty soil tones, dried roses and cedar complicate crushed wildberries and a lifting hint of rosemary evolves in the glass. It offers total pleasure on the palate, silken and round with fresh acidity for balance and a pure display of strawberry and cherry. The finish shows excellent length and framing tannins, perfectly balanced as a balsamic twang and the slightest tinge of soy fade. The 2006 is ready to go, yet balanced for many more years of cellaring.

This iconic Brunello seamlessly combines power and finesse. It opens with earthy aromas of underbrush, tobacco, tilled soil and blackberries. The dense palate delivers juicy black cherry and raspberry alongside black pepper, licorice and a balsam note. It's impeccably balanced but still very young, and still showing racy acidity and assertive tannins. Give it time to soften and develop more complexity. Drink 2016–2031. (Cellar Selection)

Rated 93 - This 2006 Col d’Orcia Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Vento Riserva has a very light nose with aromas very similar to the earlier vintages, with a little smoke, dark fruit and leather, but the aromas are brighter. Owner Count Francesco Cinzano says of this vintage “We considered it hot. It was dense and hot and it was considered a better year at the time because it produced concentrated wines.” On the palate the tannins are very firm and quite hard-edged needing a little more lightness of touch on extraction perhaps, but there is a very attractive, bright acidity that brings a lovely refreshment on the finish. - The Wine Independent
