Very well balanced, this is already a beautiful wine that could almost be drunk now. Smooth tannins and oak are layered with red and black-currant fruits that are perfumed and fresh. The structure is all there, just light and fragrant. Drink now, although the wine will fill out from 2022. (Cellar Selection)

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

Extremely perfumed and floral with hints of currants. Full body, firm and silky. Pretty fruit and finish. Bright and firm too. Milk chocolate on the finish. Drink in 2018 but already joyful.

Decanter

Palmer's hallmark elegance is still present in this wine, despite the problems of the vintage. The nose is poised and lifted, with refined blackcurrant and oak aromas. Although medium-bodied, it's quite fleshy and concentrated, with a tannic backbone to give some structure. Balanced and long, this is a Margaux that acknowledges the limitations of the year and overcomes them. Full organic certification was achieved over the three vintages following this one.

Shows good energy, with a brambly undertow beneath the dark plum, cassis and blackberry compote flavors. The finish is lined with juniper and tobacco notes, all backed by good grip. More vivacious yet less refined than the 2013 Margaux, yet still a really nice effort. Best from 2018 through 2025. 3,800 cases made.

The 2013 Palmer has an able nose, mainly red fruit, forest floor and cigar humidor, missing Palmer's usual exuberance and extrovert nature, but well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like entry. Riper and more energetic than the Rauzan-Ségla, lightly spiced with decent length. I would happily drink this over the following decade, no more. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On tasting.
