The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Anchored by ripe tannins, the 2022 is a powerful and savory Fiancée, benefitting from the inclusion of fruit that typically goes into the Pure (which was not made in 2022 due to summer hailstorm damage). A long, complex finish confirms a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape of outstanding quality with secure aging potential.

A blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah from the Cabrières and Terres Blanches lieux-dits that was raised in foudre, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Fiancée has a beautiful nose of juicy black cherries, blackberries, peppery herbs, leather, and baking spices. It has a slightly floral, exotic edge in its aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness as well as good concentration, fine tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's a beautifully balanced, complete, impressive wine that will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and shine over the following decade. There are a tiny 250 cases produced.

Winery Notes

This wine combines two seemingly opposite grapes: 100-year-old Grenache and young Syrah. However, these two varieties complement one another beautifully: a graceful blend of power and finesse with fresh fruit aromas, flowers and spices.
