Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. The beautiful north westerly wine region of Lombardy in Italy is home to many of the country's most characterful and well respected wines, most of which are grown on the shores of the stunning Lake Garda. The lake itself plays a vitally important part of the region's viticulture, as the climate around the river is cooler than in surrounding areas, thus tempering the heat of the vineyards and allowing the vines which grow there to ripen more slowly. For centuries, Lombardy wines have been considered amongst the finest in Italy, and today, the wine industry of the region is doing very well indeed. With wineries in Lombardy utilizing a successful blend of traditional and modern techniques, they are continually producing wines which express the excellence of the terroir the vines are grown on, and which contain fascinating and unique flavors and aromas.

Medium in body, the wine's elegance and texture steal the show. Rated 93 - SG ’67 refers to San Giorgio and the year this vineyard – the winery’s oldest – was planted. Bright, medium intense ruby red; aromas of bing cherry, bacon fat and crushed rose petals. Medium-full, with impressive concentration, very good acidity, well-integrated oak, excellent persistence and a rich finish with notes of mint and black spice. Beautiful varietal purity and complexity; excellent harmony. Enjoy tonight or over the next 6-8 years, perhaps longer. - Forbes

Aromas of baked cherry, black cherry, strawberry and rooibos. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins. Steady intensity with a solid core of red fruit, accented by note of rose and rosemary. Needs more time to come together. Best after 2024.

There is good concentration and depth in the Cordero San Giorgio 2019 Oltrepò Pavese Riserva Pinot Nero SG'67, my favorite wine in this series of reds. This sample shows more all-around fruit and intensity with ripe cherry, lavender and wild plum. You could also argue that there is less varietal character in this expression, given its ongoing richness and ripeness.
