97-99 Tasted out of barrel, the 2022 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a different beast. Orange blossom, honeyed tangerine, honeycomb, and spice are just some of its nuances, and this beast of a Sauternes has a massive, opulent mouthfeel, bright acidity, and a clean, focused, incredibly majestic style.

Varietal

Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc

The Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend is a harmonious coupling of two grape varieties that creates a distinctive and balanced white wine. Originating in Bordeaux, this blend is celebrated for its unique attributes. Semillon contributes a luscious texture, richness, and the potential for age-worthy complexity, especially when affected by noble rot. On the other hand, Sauvignon Blanc adds vibrant acidity, zesty citrus flavors, and herbaceous notes, providing a refreshing and aromatic quality. What makes this blend unique is the complementary nature of these grapes, resulting in a wine that boasts both depth and freshness. Producers worldwide, from Bordeaux to regions in Australia and beyond, have embraced this blend, showcasing its versatility and ability to express different terroirs. Whether enjoyed young for its lively and crisp characteristics or aged for added nuance, the Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend is a testament to the artistry of winemaking and the delightful synergy achieved by blending these two grape varieties.

Appellation

Sauternes

Sauternes, a revered appellation within Bordeaux, France, is celebrated for producing the world's finest sweet wines. What makes Sauternes unique is its climatic conditions, ideal for the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This benevolent fungus shrivels the grapes, concentrating sugars and flavors, resulting in lusciously sweet and complex wines. Predominantly crafted from Sémillon, with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle playing supporting roles, Sauternes wines exhibit opulent flavors of honey, apricot, and tropical fruits. The region's microclimates, terroir variations, and meticulous vineyard management contribute to the diversity of styles within the appellation. Châteaux like d'Yquem epitomize Sauternes' excellence, and the wines often require patience, aging gracefully for decades. The intricate dance of sweetness, acidity, and botrytis characterizes Sauternes, offering a unique tasting experience and showcasing the artistry of Bordeaux winemaking. Exploring Sauternes provides wine enthusiasts with a profound understanding of the magic that noble rot imparts to create these extraordinary dessert wines.

#36 in Top 100 World Wines, 2025. This super Sauternes has fantastic sliced apricots, pear tart, creme brulee and tarte tatin. Floral. It's full-bodied yet compacted with a complex and very sweet palate. Lovely texture at the end with salted caramel. Wow. 230 grams of residual sugar. Drink or hold.

Produced at very low yields, the 2022 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a real success. Evoking a deep, complex bouquet of orange blossom, spring flowers, saffron, spices and quince, it's dense and deep with a full-bodied, layered core of fruit and a compact palate perfectly balanced thanks to racy, bright acids that conclude in an endless, polished finish. Massive, demonstrative and well-crafted, this is a concentrated Sauternes that should age with aplomb.

The 2022 Lafaurie Peyraguey lacks a bit of bandwidth on the nose: honeysuckle and melted candle wax mixed with honey and marmalade. The palate is rounded and viscous, with clean botrytised fruit and a pleasing, slightly tangy, caramel-tinged finish that oddly reminds me of one of Alois Kracher's sweet wines. Quite delicious. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

The 2022 from Lafaurie-Peyraguey opens with a little more density suggested on the nose than many of its peers, the aromatics sweet with concentrated apricot, bitter praline, pineapple and buttered toast. The palate presents a lightly viscous concentration, seemingly determined to live up to the expectations set by the nose, with a core of pineapple, mango and yellow peach, riven with little threads of praline and toast, with a modest phenolic bitterness and charming acidity. This holds together really well and presents a more coherent and substantial whole than many of its peers in this vintage. It is long too. On the whole, in the context of 2022, an impressive result. The alcohol on the label is 12.5%.
