Burghound

A brooding and restrained nose reluctantly offers up its aromas of red and dark currant, warm earth and a menthol hint. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate density to the reasonably refined if not exactly elegant flavors that culminate in the hallmark austerity of a classic Clos de Vougeot. Patience not only a virtue but essential with this wine.

The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a light, slightly earthy bouquet that takes time to unfold in the glass. It is quite classic in style. Displaying sappy red fruit, the palate is medium-bodied and powdery in texture, but there is decent backbone on the finish that is more austere than you would think for this vintage. This has charm, though might not have the longevity of its peers. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Decanter

This comes from two parcels totalling less than one-third of a hectare, both in Grand Maupertuis near the top of the Clos. The grapes were completely destemmed prior to vinification in a single, new, small oak cask. The result is nearly impenetrable. On the nose it is reserved; on the palate, ferociously tannic. One thing is certain, it is a wine of intense concentration and massive extract.
