89-91 Firm reduction renders the nose difficult to assess in its present condition. More interesting are the succulent and highly vibrant flavors that exude a lovely minerality on the more refined if more austere finale that is a combination of focused power and finesse.

Varietal Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

88-90 The 2021 Vosne-Romanée La Combe Brûlée Vieilles Vignes is an intensely taut, mineral Vosne built on energy and brightness. Salivating acids run through a core of red-fleshed fruit, smoke, slate, dried herbs and blood orange. This fleshes out nicely on the back end without losing energy. Because of its late-ripening character, this parcel on limestone soils was more protected from the frost than many other sites among the domaine's holdings.

Winery Notes

The wine can take on a strained character in cold years or a more open expression in favorable years. Regardless of the vintage, the Vosne-Romanée La Combe Brulée still shows great complexity when decanted (wild berries, flowers, sun-warmed stone), revealing in particular a beautiful viscosity. It is a subtle wine that expresses itself on its mineral length.
