Nebbiolo

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Piedmont

Situated in the north-western part of Italy, the region of Piedmont is known worldwide and is highly respected for the quality of the wines produced there. Many of the most successful sub-regions in Piedmont produce many of the world's finest red wines, such as those made from the excellent Nebbiolo grape varietal in areas such as Barolo and Barbaresco. However, the historic wineries which typify this region use a relatively wide variety of grapes, including Dolcetto and Barbera for their red wines, which are typically aged and have a delightful velvety character. Piedmont isn't all about beautifully complex red wines, though, as it is also famed for high quality, elegant sparkling wines, notably the Asti wines made with the white Moscato grape. The region benefits from a range of terroirs which are often well expressed in the sparkling wines, and a wonderfully consistent climate ideal for vineyard cultivation.

#53 in Top 100 World Wines, 2025. A super-fresh and elegant Barolo with leafy lightness, red currants, watermelon, licorice and a touch of sweet violets on the nose. Slight sweetness on the palate, with a lot of minty flavors, a full body, fresh acidity and quite firm yet velvety tannins. Great overall harmony, with a savory aftertaste and a lavish finish.

Rated 98 - The newest addition to Paolo Scavino's already impressive Barolo lineup, the 2021 Bussia Vigna Fantini another drop-dead beauty from the estate. Hailing from a vineyard the family purchased in 2018 where the previous owner had planted different clones of Nebbiolo including the Rosé variety, it's intense and fragrant, opening with heady scents of rose, iris, cake spice and menthol. Full-bodied but boasting a weightless concentration, the enveloping, delicious palate doles out raspberry compote, ripe Morello cherry, licorice and vanilla before a minty close. Velvety tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it well balanced. Drink 2031–2041. - Kerin O'Keefe

The Scavino family bought this site in Monforte d'Alba in 2019, and this is the newest wine added to the portfolio. The Paolo Scavino 2021 Barolo Bussia Vigna Fantini has a lot of fruit freshness with raspberry and wild blueberry. From a cool site at 370 meters above sea level with southwest exposures, the soils are rocky with loose sand. The family describes this as their "botanical garden" becauase it is a vineyard that sees a lot of experimentation with clones and rootstocks. They say that the learning curve with Bussia was great and they needed a few years to understand how to best draw out its character (fruit from leased vineyards in Bussia previously was blended into the classic Barolo). This wine delivers a floral bouquet with violets and lilac. The tannic structure of this wine is different in that it results in full-bodied, rich and velvety sensations.

The 2021 Bussia Vigna Fantini is a deep, powerful wine. Dark cherry, spice, menthol and strong balsamic inflections all meld together. This especially virile, strapping Barolo packs a serious punch. Time in the glass brings out Bussia breadth as spiced, floral aromatics literally explode on the finish. This is a tremendous debut. I can see the Bussia Vigna Fantini joining the ranks of the very finest Barolos in this range.

This red starts out round, with density and flavors of plum, black cherry, earth, tobacco and eucalyptus. Assertive, chalky tannins emerge as this builds on the palate, leaving a dry, tactile finish. Backward and will need at least five years to come together. Best from 2030 through 2053.

The 2021 Barolo Bussia Vigna Fantini leaps from the glass with a layered cologne of menthol, dried cherries, toasted sage, cigar box, and blood orange. The palate is compact, with good concentration and a more chiseled and linear feel, a bright spine of acidity, mouthwatering salinity, angular tannins, and a stony finish. Bringing a good deal of tension forward at this tasting, It demands more time in the cellar. Drink 2027-2047.
