Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

Bright, deep red. Explosively perfumed aromas of redcurrant, red cherry, yellow plum, violet, minerals and licorice on the captivating nose. Powerful, superconcentrated and seamless, with superb inner-mouth perfume and energy to the underbrush, sweet spice and white stone fruit flavors. Very full and sophisticated on the long finish, which boasts a seamless texture and uncommon flavor complexity. This is still amazingly young and built for the long haul. A absolutely superb wine from one of the greatest Brunello vintages of all time. This also spent 48 months in large oak cask.

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Vento Riserva is a gorgeous expression that shows the beauty and grace of carefully aged Sangiovese. I described the wine as a “smooth talker” in my notes thanks to its seamless dialogue of sweet cherry, vanilla, toasted oak, licorice and anisette. Silky sensations also come through on the palate. Decant three hours or more. Drink: 2014-2028.

Deep ruby red. Intense and well balanced. The typical aromas of the Sangiovese (ripe red fruits) are enhanced by the classic spicy aromas originating from the long ageing in barrel. Powerful and elegant. The soft and ripe tannins are balanced with a pleasant acidity. Long spicy fruity aftertaste.
