The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

Medium red, the 2023 Brusco Dei Barbi is sunny with aromas of balsamic, baked cherries, red plum, tomato leaf, and toasted spices. Medium to full-bodied, it has ripe tannins and a light, savory, gamey richness. Brusco, which refers to a type of shell, was first released in 1969 and is a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. It has a bit more depth and chewiness, though it is not heavy and remains light on its feet.

Winery Notes

Bright ruby-red color. Vivid red-berry and wild strawberry fruit, complemented by floral notes. The palate is supple, fresh with soft tannins, a pleasant acidity and a medium finish. This is a versatile, approachable wine, ideal as an everyday companion to be shared around a table with family and friends. It is produced mostly with Sangiovese, enhancing the typical fruity aspect of this varietal when it is drunk young.
