The 2024 Morgon Château-Gaillard is sourced from vines planted in 1920 and 1952 on sandy-granite soils close to Fleurie. This has an expressive bouquet with perfumed violet scents filtering through the mixture of red and blue fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, displaying fine structure and good length, albeit without the precision that I found in the 2023. (90-92)

Winery Notes

100% Gamay. The Château Gaillard lieu-dit lies in the climat of Douby, which is in northeastern Morgon near the Fleurie border, and used to be folded into the entry-level Desvignes bottling called "La Voûte St. Vincent". Their Gaillard parcel is 1.03 hectares of 80-year-old, south-facing vines on sandy granite soils. Viticulture and vinification are consistent across all Desvignes wines. The vines are certified-organic and harvested by hand. The clusters go through a semi-carbonic maceration in closed concrete vats, with a submerged-cap maceration of 10-14 days. A very small amount of sulfur (1-2 grams/hectoliter) is added after malo and sometimes at bottling. The wine is aged in concrete for about 7 months and bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration.
