The 2000 Château Figeac is now fully mature and at point, yet has plenty of life ahead, showing almost no signs of bricking in color at the edge. It’s an incredibly complex, nuanced example of Figeac that shines more for its complexity than power. Beautiful currants, green tobacco, cedar, and lead pencil aromatics give way to a medium-bodied Saint-Emilion with a wonderful core of sweet fruit, silky, polished tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. Building beautifully with time in the glass, it’s a complex, nuanced, gorgeous Figeac to enjoy any time over the coming two decades. As is common with this wine, it has a Left Bank vibe and I’d probably guess this was a top Saint-Julien in a blind tasting.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Overt rosemary, bay and tobacco notes lead the way, backed by dark fig and steeped black currant fruit flavors at the core. The finish is loamy-edged, with a serious tug of earth. There's nice flesh and density here, though I like where this is now, rather than wanting to wait too much longer. -- Blind 2000 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2015). Drink now through 2020. 8,333 cases made.

Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property. It is some years since I last tasted the 2000 Figeac. There is a valid argument that it is being eclipsed by the 2001, but it is still a fine Saint Emilion. The nose is clean and fresh with strong graphite aromas, very Left Bank in style with black truffle and smoky notes developing. The palate is masculine and rather austere at first, though I notice that it gains fleshiness in the glass. It is nicely weighted, but does not quite deliver the sensuality or joie-de-vivre of the 2001 (which is actually like a lot of millennial Bordeaux). Let's see how it matures over the next few years, but my money would be on the 2001. Tasted June 2015.

The 2000 Figeac is similar to the bottle tasted at the château just three months earlier. Still a tad rustic on the nose with singed leather and earthenware infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, quite Left Bank in style, a little rough in texture with a slightly herbaceous finish. Maybe marginally better than the previous bottle, though it does nothing to dispel the idea that the 2001 is the better Figeac. Tasted at the Figeac vertical in Berlin.
