There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The beautiful sub-region of Saint Emilion in France's legendary Bordeaux region is regarded as the home of many of the world's finest red wines. The blending techniques employed in Saint Emilion have been passed down for generations, and aim to express the very finest flavors of the grape varietals used, most commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The climatic conditions in Saint Emilion are perfect for growing many of the Bordeaux grapes, and high yields of exceptional quality are commonplace. Fed by the mighty Gironde river and benefiting from superb clay and gravel based soils, Saint Emilion produces millions of bottles of high quality blended and unblended red wines each year, and continues to be a firm favorite of wine experts and the general public alike.

The 2023 Grand-Mayne is impressive, but it is also very young and in need of time. Black fruit, gravel, incense, licorice, leather, scorched earth and sweet French oak stain the palate. This large-scaled, broad Saint-Émilion needs time to be at its best. The style leans very much into the more opulent end of the spectrum. Tasted two times.

A gorgeous, serious Saint-Emilion, the 2023 Château Grand Mayne offers ripe black cherries, graphite, sappy flowers, and spicy wood, with a hint of background chocolate. Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and aged 16 months in 40% new French oak with the balance in one- and two-year-old barrels and foudre, it's medium-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with beautifully integrated oak, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and well worth seeking out. I'd happily have bottles in the cellar, and it will have two decades of prime drinking. Drink 2026-2045.

93-94 2023 Grand Mayne offers a tempting nose of blancmange and crunchy fruit. This wine has lots of well defined fruit and an excellent, pure structure. The taste is long and fine with notable amounts of almost perfectly ripe fruit. It should age well.

With aromas of red fruit, quite chipper and friendly, the palate reflects more (pleasing) limestone aspects, even if a tad timid in expressing the red fruit ripeness, along with crushed mint and allspice. I like the juicy mid-palate. The structured tannin leads to a medium finish but just slightly standoffish. The 18 months ageing in 50% new oak should soften the finish.
Winery Notes
A wine must reflect its terroir, its origins. We strongly believe that the uniqueness of the vineyard’s location is fundamental in the conception of a great wine. There can never be a great wine without a great vineyard." Jean-Antoine & Damien NONY In this respect, the wines of Château Grand Mayne are completely expressive of their place of origin. They are proud representatives of the best terroirs of the western hillside and foot of St. Émilion, composed of clay and limestone. A subtle blend of merlot and cabernet franc, the wines of Grand Mayne combine the power of fruit, elegant tension and finesse. Known for their excellent ageing potential, the recent vintages of Château Grand Mayne are now more open and accessible in their early years.
