91-94 The 2023 Château Cote De Baleau is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in 30% new barrels. It has a deeper ruby hue as well as gorgeous aromatics of cassis and ripe mulberries along with spring flowers, graphite, and a kiss of minerality. This medium-bodied, elegant, graceful Saint-Emilion has fine tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length. It’s clearly outstanding, if not a touch more.
There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Aromas of bark, subtle dark berries and chalk. Medium-bodied, with precise, chalky tannins framing delicate dark fruit and a tight finish. Structured yet showing restrained underlying power. 95% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Needs a bit more time to soften. Better from 2028.

Shows a good, fleshy feel for the vintage, with cherry paste and raspberry pâte de fruit notes lined with red licorice and apple wood. The focused, tobacco-tinged finish keeps this honest. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2027 through 2035. 5,600 cases made, 600 cases imported.

Cropped at 50hl/ha, this Merlot-dominated blend at 14% alcohol has subtle floral aromas. Coming from 17 hectares of vines on sandy clay and limestone soils on southern slopes, the wine is rounded with rather soft, powdery tannins. A bit strict towards the finish line (not tart, but tangy) however, noticeably lacking that 'extra leap of ripeness' you get from a vintage like 2018, 2019 or 2020, but well crafted. An orange rind freshness on the medium finish reassures. Tasted twice with similar results. Ageing in 25% new oak.

90-91 From the team behind Clos Fourtet, the 2023 Côte de Baleau offers up aromas of sweet cherries, berries and kirsch followed by a medium to full-bodied, polished and suave palate. It's a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

The 2023 Côte de Baleau has a tightly wound bouquet with mainly black fruit, mixed with pressed roses and allspice scents. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive grip on the entry, more volume and density than its peers, quite peppery toward the finish that has satisfying sustain. Very promising.
Attractive aromas of blueberries and mulberries with graphite, dark licorice and crushed stones. Dark chocolate, too. Full-bodied. Impressive quality to…
