Merlot

With its dark blue colored fruits and high juice content, Merlot varietal grapes have long been a favorite of wine producers around the globe, with it being found in vineyards across Europe, the Americas and elsewhere in the New World. One of the distinguishing features of Merlot grapes is the fact that they have a relatively low tannin content and an exceptionally soft and fleshy character, meaning they are capable of producing incredibly rounded and mellow wines. This mellowness is balanced with plenty of flavor, however, and has made Merlot grapes the varietal of choice for softening other, more astringent and tannin-heavy wines, often resulting in truly exceptional produce. Merlot is regarded as one of the key 'Bordeaux' varietals for precisely this reason; when combined with the drier Cabernet Sauvignon, it is capable of blending beautifully to produce some of the finest wines available in the world.

Coming from vineyards in the northern part of the appellation that were planted in 2000 exclusively with Merlot, the first vintage of the San Walfredo was in 2016, but they didn’t produce it in 2017 or 2018, so this is the second vintage of this wine to be released. In the glass, it has a dark red/inky color, and the nose is lush with inviting aromas of red apples, cassis, polished leather, toasted cedar, incense, and lavender. Full-bodied, it fills the palate with the velvety and silky plushness of the coating texture, and it offers balanced, ripe, liqueur-like fruit and a long finish, with gentle accents of stony earth hiding underneath. It’s exceptional all around. Drink 2027-2050. 7272 bottles were produced.
