Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Brunello di Montalcino, an esteemed wine appellation in Tuscany, Italy, has been crafting exceptional red wines since its establishment in 1966. Focused exclusively on the Sangiovese grape, specifically the local Brunello clone, this region's unique terroir of warm, dry climate and well-drained soils imparts richness and complexity to the wines. The Podere le Ripi 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene is the standout bottle in this eclectic portfolio. This wine draws its fruit from a second site in Castelnuovo dell'Abate with reddish-brown magnesium-rich alkaline soils. These give a strong imprint to the wine that comes off as rusty nail or iron ore. Those mineral tones are folded into bright cherry, blackcurrant and candied espresso bean. In 2018, winemaker Sebastiano Nasello started experimenting with partial whole cluster. The tannins are more astringent in this case, and the wine should be given long runway to age. It delivers impressive focus and lift. This is a release of 13,000 bottles.

On the subdued side today, this Brunello's macerated cherry and plum fruit is matched with earth, iron and spice flavors, plus a hint of licorice. Guided by vivid acidity and a light touch of tannins on the resilient finish. This improved with aeration, gaining length on the detailed finish, so be patient. Best from 2027 through 2045.

Winery Notes

Lupi e Sirene just a few meters away from the above-mentioned vineyard, is dominated by light alkaline marl, the ground darkens and granite appears clearly. Same exposure, same altitude, different geology. Here the Sangiovese is less approachable and needs more patience. The presence of iron in the soil is also found in the glass offering the typical haematic notes that some Sangiovese have. It is a wine that in the first 10 years of its life often goes through reduction phases. We define it as a masculine and earthy wine.
