95-97 Barrel Sample. The wine has powerful tannins as well as ripe smoky fruits. With its red-fruit aroma and a salinity that is typical of Bordeaux, it is a fine, structured wine with black fruits and layers of tannins. It will age well.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Decanter

Gorgeous fragrance, quite dark and perfumed, dark chocolate, spice and graphite. Smooth and supple, nicely agile in the glass. Good weight - it’s sleek but this has bounce and great charm. Juicy and lively, but an almost sweet rather than sour juiciness which slowly expands in the mouth. Feels calm and collected, charming and suave. Nothing out of place with just gripping, saline, liquorice and graphite-edged tannins. Still a bit compact on the finish, but this has a long length. Really lovely, streamlined and feels finessed. High definition tannins and long minty finish. 15-16% press. 3.74pH. 50% grand vin production. Yields of 39hl/ha for the reds.

Enticing aromas of black currants, sweet tobacco, orange peel and peach blossoms follow through to a medium body with fine tannins and spicy, meaty and lightly chocolaty flavors. It's long and flavorful yet refined. Drink in two or three years.

The 2023 Malartic Lagravière expresses the terroir and character of Pessac-Léognan with style: blackberry and wild strawberry, black olive and marine scents, just a hint of Japanese wakame. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, smooth and harmonious, classic Bordeaux and proud of it. This is unequivocally a cut above many other Pessac-Léognan wines tasted in Bordeaux.

Based on 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc and aged in 60% new French oak with the balance in second-fill barrels, the 2023 Château Malartic-Lagravière is a gorgeous, round, and layered effort showing ripe cherries, cassis, spicy wood, and graphite on the nose. It's medium-bodied on the palate, with supple tannins and terrific overall balance. It's not massive, but it shines for its purity and finesse, and it's very much in the classic, balanced style of the vintage. Drink this outstanding Pessac-Léognan over the coming 15-20 years. Drink 2026-2046.

Plump and generous, with cassis and black cherry compote notes that sparkle with mesquite, violet, iris and savory hints. The sleek structure harnesses the fruit nicely, giving this a stylish finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2037. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 11,800 cases made.

The Wine Independent

90-92 2023 Malartic Lagraviere has a fine, classic, crunchy nose followed by a deep, roasted, velvety taste. This is developing along the lines typical for this chateau resulting in a very charming 2023. It is a medium bodied wine that should be ready for consumption in 4-5 years time.

WA 90pts

Wine Advocate

One of the rare wines that does not entirely confirm the expectations formed at the en primeur stage, the 2023 Malartic Lagravière reveals aromas of cigar wrapper, smoke, cassis and oak, underscored by a slightly carnal nuance. Medium- to full-bodied, structured and tannic, it is firm and somewhat rustic on the finish. Time in the cellar will be required for it to harmonize and fully reveal its potential.
