Dark berries with chocolate and lightly toasted oak on the nose. Opens to a full body with silky tannins and a focused and fine finish. Shows tension and beauty. Drink or hold.
There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.
France, often regarded as the heart of the wine world, boasts a rich history, diverse terroirs, and a captivating variety of grape varietals. From the renowned vineyards of Bordeaux to the picturesque landscapes of Burgundy, France offers a wine lover’s dream journey. Whether you’re new to the world of wine or a seasoned enthusiast looking […]

Saint-Julien, a revered appellation in Bordeaux's Left Bank, epitomizes the finesse and elegance of red Bordeaux wines. Nestled between Pauillac and Margaux, Saint-Julien boasts a remarkable concentration of classified growths, showcasing wines that marry power with refinement. What makes Saint-Julien unique is its well-balanced terroir—gravelly soils, proximity to the Gironde estuary, and a temperate maritime climate. These factors nurture the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, resulting in wines celebrated for their structured tannins, expressive aromatics, and age-worthiness.
Saint-Julien's notable châteaux, such as Léoville-Las Cases and Ducru-Beaucaillou, exemplify the region's commitment to quality. The wines exhibit a harmonious blend of dark fruits, cedar, and subtle minerality. Exploring Saint-Julien unveils the essence of Bordeaux winemaking, where tradition and innovation converge to produce wines of timeless allure and sophistication.

A dense wine with great fruit, this has a velvet texture and great elegance. There is structure of course from the firm tannins that stay in the background, while the main thrust of this wine is its great blackberry fruit. It will age and should be drunk from 2025.

89-91 The 2015 Lalande-Borie is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 55% Merlot. Picked from 26 September until 2-3 October, it has a surprising bouquet: high-toned and exotic for the vintage, very intense cassis and iodine aromas, perhaps needing just a little more complexity to come through, though I am sure it will by the time of bottling. The palate is more controlled at the moment, restores order as it were. The tannins are quite dense, lending weight to this Lalande-Borie, the acidity is nicely judged and the finesse finally comes through towards the finish.

The 2015 is not as strong a vintage as the 2016 but there's a lot to enjoy here. Right off the nose it offers clarity of black fruits, with blasts of coffee bean and mocha, spiced olive paste, an exotic edge of cloves and pepper, and slate minerality that gives lovely lift to the finish. More ready to drink than the 2016.

On the softer side, with alluring mulled spice, black tea and warm fruitcake aromas and flavors emerging from the core of gently steeped plum and blackberry fruit. Perfumy mesquite and incense notes gild the finish. Best from 2019 through 2028.

The 2015 Lalande-Borie is gracious, understated and classy. There is lovely aromatic lift to perk up the dark red and purplish berry flavors. Silky, medium in body and gracious, Lalande-Borie shows the more feminine side of Saint-Julien to great effect. The blend is 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon. I would prefer to drink the 2015 over the next handful of years.

The 2015 Château Lalande-Borie is more perfumed and extroverted compared to the 2016 and gives up lots of ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit characteristics as well as more graphite, spring flowers, earthy minerality and toasted oak. Textured, medium-bodied, elegant and seamless on the palate, it shines more for its elegance and nuance than power. Drink it anytime over the coming 15-20 years.
Winery Notes
From 2019 vintage Lalande-Borie has been re labeled as Petit Ducru and becoming Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou third wine.
