The last vintage from this site as the team transitions to more estate fruit, the 2023 Heart Stone Vineyard is based on 51% Graciano, 27% Syrah, 12% Grenache, and 5% each Petite Sirah and Touriga Nacional. It was fermented with 10% stems in concrete fermenters and aged 21 months in 76% new French and Austrian oak (300-liter and 600-liter barrels). Deep purple-hued, it’s a rich, powerful red with notes of red and black cherries, sappy flowers, juniper, licorice, and exotic spice. Full-bodied and layered, it has a deep mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s another brilliant wine from this team. Drink 2025-2040.

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. For the past couple of centuries, the United States has set about transforming much of its suitable land into vast vineyards, capable of supporting a wide variety of world-class grape varietals which thrive on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coastlines. Of course, we immediately think of sun-drenched California in regards to American wines, with its enormous vineyards responsible for the New World's finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines, but many other states have taken to viticulture in a big way, with impressive results. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The winds coming off the ocean cool the vines, and the natural valleys and mountainsides which make up most of the state's wine regions make for ideal areas in which to cultivate a variety of high quality grapes.

The 2023 Heart Stone Vineyard wows the senses with a pretty blend of crushed blackberries, smoky grilled sage, hints of wet stone and licorice. This is deeply textural, round and supple, with depths of ripe red and blue fruits, supported by cooling acidity, as nuances of sweet lavender amass toward the close. The 2023 is pure seduction, long and gently chewy, with a web of fine tannins as a resonance of exotic spice and a subtle citrus tinge elevates the experience. Fans of Heart Stone will not want to miss this darling interpretation of the vineyard. It's a blend of 51% Graciano, 27% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 5% Petite Sirah and 5% Touriga Nacional.

Another swan song in the Saxum lineup this year, the 2023 Heart Stone Vineyard features a high proportion of Graciano, leading with lifted, brambly and spice-driven accents set against a deep, black-fruited core with an undercurrent of black licorice. The palate delivers a punchy, rich profile that seamlessly transitions into an effortless, decadent and saturated finish with additional herbal and spice-driven flourishes that linger. A blend of 51% Graciano, 27% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 5% Petite Sirah and 5% Touriga Nacional, it was aged for 22 months in 68% new 300-liter barrique and a small portion of new 600-liter puncheon.

A real head-turner, with aromas of pennyroyal, allspice, black pepper and wild strawberry that join the lush, full-bodied palate, filled with spice-roasted plum and boysenberry flavors, plus twinges of anise and tobacco on the fringes. A nudge of acidity draws out the long finish around sculpted tannins and lingering notes of mulberry and pepper. Graciano, Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Touriga Nacional.
