There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Wine Independent

I was unable to visit this property during my schedule in Bordeaux, but was grateful for the opportunity to taste a sample at home in Scotland. Pulling the cork I find a nose of sweet blackcurrant, blackberry, bay leaf and iron minerals. There follows a rather cool and very modestly composed palate which picks up on the aromatic themes presented on the nose, with notes of dried blackberry, tar, bay leaf and thyme, leading to a dry grip of tannins and a peppered finish. Sappy and fresh, taut rather than plush, with a warm and bitter finish, this is a nice effort from this estate, where there is a new push for quality from the proprietors, the Lambert family. It finishes with a light wrapping of powdery-sandy tannins and certainly has some cellar potential. Well done. The alcohol declared on the label is 14.5%.

The wines of Chateau de sales possess the characteristics of their terroir: fruitness, suppleness, roundness, fleshness, good structure on the palate and for these qualities they are amongst the finest wines of the Pomerol appellation.
