Friday, September 4th Jehovah detests a devious person, but his close friendship is with the upright, taken from Proverbs chapter 3, verse 32. Thank you, Brother McFadden. Our first commenter this morning will listen to Brother Seth Fiedel. Imagine in front of you, there's a bridge connecting two sides of a large canyon. On one side is Jehovah, and on the other side is someone who doesn't know him yet. We've already developed a close friendship with Jehovah, so we know that the bridge connecting the 2 is trustworthy. We can tell the person about Jehovah, but they still might wonder, can I really trust what this person believes? But then they watch us cross the bridge. They see us being honest, even when it would be easier not to. We're not just telling them that living according to Jehovah's standards works, we're showing them. Our honesty gives them something that they can actually see and trust. It shows that our friendship with Jehovah produces something real in us. And when they see our honesty, isn't just a personality trait, but a result of our relationship with Jehovah, the bridge may start to look trustworthy to them as well. That could make them want to cross it themselves. To get to know Jehovah, and to develop the same friendship that we have, uh, that's made such a difference in our lives. So our honesty not only strengthens our own friendship with Jehovah, it can also help someone else to take those 1st steps towards building a relationship with him. Thank you, Brother Feedel. Enjoyed that illustration. Next, we'll give our attention to Sister Beth Finlayson. The text comments mentions Psalms chapter 15. And verse one says, O Jehovah, who may be a guest in your tent? A bit ago, I caught myself kind of wishing I could experience some of the special things visitors got when they came to Bethel at a certain time of year. And then I visited another Bethel for some time, and I felt spoiled. I realized that guests are treated special. And then the scripture came to mind, and it's really because we're all guests of Jehovah. When hostess people over, he prepares with his guests in mind. And Jehovah, the most perfect toast, has done that for us. He views us as precious to him. So I want to make sure that I'm a good guest by my actions, and I can't wait till I'm perfect toast unveils what he's been planning for us in the new world. Excellent, Sister Finlayson. Thank you for that. And next we'll give our attention to Sister Helen Fernandez. Sometimes it's a simple, kind word that can touch your heart. A few weeks ago after a convention we attended, a group of friends went out to eat, and while talking, one brother said, you know what I learned today in one of the videos? Suddenly, the waiter leaned in and said, tell me, what did you learn? The brother explained. I learned that I need to be more loving, more accessible, focus on the good that I see in others. Stop judging. Encourage people for their efforts and tell them the good and nice things I see in them. The waiter was moved. He said, wow. Thank you. It's been a long time since anyone has encouraged me like that. I really needed to hear this. As the meal ended, a dessert arrived at the table that nobody had ordered, and moments later, what do you know? It was the waiter, full of gratitude that came back to thank them again for those uplifting words. This is a beautiful reminder that whenever we see something good, let's continue to say something sincere and upbuild others, just like Jesus did. Thank you, Sister Fernandez, and thanks for sharing that fine experience. Next, we'll give attention to her husband, Julian. Jehovah wants us to be his close friends, and his world shows that while he hates life and tricks, his intimate friendship is with those who do what is right. To be welcome as a guest in his tent, we must leave honestly and speak the truth straight from the heart. And when we do, Jehovah keep us safe in his secret place. In our daily lives, whether he had better in the field, in the congregation with the family, or when no one is watching, being honest means resisting the temptation to lie, make excuses, or take a dishonest shortcut. But remembering that our friendship with Jehovah is what matters most, we choose absolute integrity, protecting our bond, with our heavily father, and remaining safe under his loving care. Thank you, brother Fernandez, and thanks to all the commenters this morning. You all did fantastic, and you all gave us something positive to think about and to talk about throughout our day. Well, all of our commenters had that common theme of friendship with Jehovah. And although our theme text this morning contains a warning, there are also a source of tremendous encouragement. Because it remind us that we can enjoy more than just a friendship with God, But actually, we can have a close friendship with him. Now, we know the Bible contains various references regarding friendship with Jehovah, but what does it take to become, and then to maintain, a close friendship with him? We'll invite you to open your Bibles to Jeremiah chapter 23. Because here, Jeremiah actually helps us to answer that very question. And here in Jeremiah chapter 23 and verse 18, Jeremiah uses a particularly vivid expression to show just how close or the bond that we can have with our heavenly Father, Jehovah. Here in verse 18. He says, for who has stood in the inner circle of Jehovah? The inner circle of Jehovah. Isn't that a beautiful expression? You know, many of us, we have our circle of friends, which often we refer to those that we come in contact with on a daily basis. But then we also have an inner circle, right? And those are usually reserved only for our closest of friends. Those whom we trust, those whom we feel comfortable expressing our innermost, our deepest feelings too. Well, that's the thought being conveyed here in Jeremiah. Being in Jehovah's inner circle, suggests a special intimacy with him. So what a remarkable thought that is, that we can actually have this type of relationship with the sovereign of the universe. But as with any friendship, that kind of relationship doesn't come automatically, right? That requires work. It requires effort to cultivate it. to maintain it. We know the nation of Israel. They enjoyed a special relationship with Jehovah. But simply being born into that nation didn't make them automatically a part of Jehovah's inner circle. Each individual had to work on that themselves, that relationship, to have that privilege. And actually, here in chapter 23, Jeremiah outlines how Israel, and particularly their false prophets here, have failed in cultivating that friendship, remaining in Jehovah's inner circle. So is there something that we can learn here in Jeremiah's words that give us insight into who Jehovah invites into this close relationship with him? Well, we're going to note 3 requirements here that Jeremiah speaks of. Here's the first. Go back to Jeremiah chapter 23, and we're going to read this time, verse 18 in its entirety. Verse 18 says, for who has stood in the inner circle of Jehovah? To see and hear his word. Who has paid attention to his word in order to hear it? So you notice here, the 1st requirement of those who Jehovah invites is to be his trusted friends. Those who listen to him. Now that makes sense, right? Because any close friendship that we have is usually made up of 2 good listeners. And that's where many in Jeremiah's day fell short. See, they claim to represent Jehovah. They even claimed to speak in his behalf. But they failed to first take the time to listen to him. So is there a lesson that we can learn here from this? Well, if we want to remain in Jehovah's inner circle, we need to keep listening to him. Now, how does Jehovah speak to us today? We know that's through his word, the Bible, right, through our publications, our assemblies, our conventions, information conveyed to us to the faithful and discreet slave, our spiritual program, such as we're enjoying this morning. These are all ways that Jehovah speaks to us. As full-time servants, we live very busy lives. Besides our assignments, we're also busy helping others in the ministry. We're giving talks, we're caring for shepherding, as well as other special privileges. But Jeremiah here helps us to appreciate something important. They remind us that before we can help others to draw close to Jehovah, we need to make sure that we ourselves are close to him. And we do that by listening to him on a regular basis. So our personal Bible reading, our meditation. See, those things aren't optional. Those aren't things that we fit in if we have time around our other activities. Those are kept a priority, and then, as Jeremiah says here in verse 18, that's how we hear and pay attention to Jehovah. So although we lead busy lives, we need to make the time to personally listen to him. Those are the type of people that Jehovah invites into his inner circle. Now, verse 16 here identifies a 2nd requirement for enjoying close friendship with Jehovah. Says, this is what Jehovah Army says. Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are prophesying to you. They are deluding you. The vision they speak is from their own heart. Not from the mouth of Jehovah. So you notice here the 2nd requirement. Those in Jehovah's inner circle, they think, and therefore speak, like him. And that, too, is often true of very close friends. Perhaps this has happened to you, your mate, or close friend. They say something, and that's exactly what you were thinking. Well why? Because you have that close bond. The false prophets in Jeremiah's day failed in that regard, as we said earlier, they didn't take the time to listen to Jehovah. They didn't time take the time to seek his viewpoint. And instead, they ended up, as Jeremiah says, here speaking from their own heart, relying on their own thinking. Now, what's the lesson here for us? If we don't take the time to regularly listen to Jehovah, to have our good spiritual routine, we can eventually begin relying upon our own thoughts, our own heart, voicing our own opinions or our experience. You know, after being years in Bethel service, in the circuit work, caring for congregation responsibilities, the temptation can be there to begin resting upon our own thinking, our own experience, thinking, well, I've cared for similar situations like this in the past. I know exactly what to do. Experience is valuable. In fact, Jehovah often uses brothers and sisters with experience to accomplish his purpose. But experience is no replacement for getting Jehovah's thoughts on matters. Think of Abraham, who the Bible refers to as Jehovah's Friend. The longer he served Jehovah, the less self reliant he became. So many years in full time service, those don't eliminate our need to constantly look to Jehovah for his advice, his thinking. That's how we continue to think and speak like him, and that's who Jehovah wants as his close friends. Now, verse 22 outlines a 3rd requirement. Jeremiah 2322. It says, But if they had stood in my inner circle, They would have made my people hear my words, and would have caused them to turn back from their bad way and their evil deeds. Well, what's the point here? Those in Jehovah's inner circle help others stay in that circle along with them. Once again, Jeremiah says the false prophets here failed in that regard. Rather than helping people to return to Jehovah to stay close to him, they reassured the people everything was fine. Even though they were in spiritual danger. Well, what's the takeaway here for us? Well, if we want to remain a close friend of Jehovah, then we have to take care of our friends, right? Our close friends, we want to be alert and ready to help. When we see a brother or sister drifting spiritually. And to illustrate, perhaps as you've experienced this, it's a cold, chilly, fall evening, and you're standing around a fire to keep warm. When you notice, a friend standing at a distance, and he's shivering because he's so cold. Well, what do you conclude? Well, when he gets cold enough, he'll come up close to the fire. No, right? We get our friend, we invite him. Come up close, stand next to me, get warm. Get close to the fire here, along with me. Well, that's what we want to do in a spiritual sense. See, if we see a brother or a sister, a workmate, if they're a drifting spiritually, maybe it's through their choice of entertainment. Maybe it's what we notice about their speech. Maybe it's their use of alcohol. Well, we want to be quick to come to their aid, to offer help, to have the courage to speak up, to reach out, to help them get the help that they need. And why do we do that? Again, because we love them. And because we're in the inner circle, we want them to be in that inner circle along with us. Well, Proverbs chapter 3, verse 32 assures us that Jehovah's close friendship is with the upright. And what a privilege it is to have that type of friendship, relationship with our father, Jehovah. So may we continue to listen to Jehovah. Learn to think and speak like him, and be quick to help others. Keep staying that inner circle along with us. If we do, then we can remain among those whom Jehovah is pleased to call his close friends. Well, now ask Brother McFadden to read our text comments. We can learn about the importance of having a sincere heart from Jesus' first meeting with Nathaniel. When Philip brought his friend Nathaniel to meet Jesus, something remarkable happened. Although Jesus had never met Nathaniel, Jesus said, See, truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit. Jesus saw in Nathaniel an extraordinary sincerity. Like us, Nathaniel was imperfect, but there was nothing artificial or insincere about him. Jesus admired that, and commended Nathaniel for it. Most of the requirements for pleasing Jehovah, listed in Psalm 15, are related to how we treat others. Psalm 153 states that a guest in Jehovah's 10 does not slander with his tongue. He does nothing bad to his neighbor, and he does not defame his friends. Misusing our speech in such ways could cause serious harm to others.
