A big-shouldered, powerful and classic Pomerol. Inky black in colour even at 11 years old, this is concentrated yet juicy and built for pleasure, filled with dense black cherries, fleshy raspberries, liquorice and shaved chocolate. On soils that are largely clay and gravel, with sandier sections, making it an excellent reflection of the appellation, and more than showcasing its ability to deliver superbly brushed tannins that gently pillow the Merlot-dominant fruit. Drinking Window 2020 – 2040.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Pomerol

Pomerol, a distinguished appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, stands as a vinous jewel celebrated for its exceptional Merlot-dominant red wines. What makes Pomerol unique is its relatively small size, allowing for an intimate focus on individual vineyards and an emphasis on artisanal winemaking. Unlike many Bordeaux regions, Pomerol does not have a formal classification system, placing the spotlight on each estate's intrinsic quality and distinct terroir. Merlot thrives in Pomerol's clay-rich soils, crafting wines of opulence, velvety texture, and alluring plum and black cherry notes. Iconic châteaux like Pétrus and Le Pin showcase the pinnacle of Pomerol's winemaking prowess. The absence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends further accentuates the appellation's uniqueness. Pomerol wines are revered for their approachability in youth and the ability to evolve gracefully over time, exemplifying the timeless elegance and allure of this exceptional Bordeaux appellation.

A wine I've had multiple times, the 2012 Clinet is a rich, beautifully pure effort that has terrific notes of black currants, plums, charred earth, licorice and smoke. Luxuriously textured, full-bodied, impeccably balanced and incredibly sexy on the palate, this is a fabulous Pomerol that I'd happily drink anytime over the coming 15-20 years.

Wine Advocate

With a dense purple color and gorgeous levels of fruit, especially black raspberry and blackcurrant, this full-bodied, opulent style of wine is another great success for Clinet, a château that has been on top of its game for the last decade. This is stunning stuff, and whatever new oak has been used – and there is plenty – it is totally disguised by the luxurious and extravagant fruit level. This full-bodied, opulent Pomerol should drink well for 15 or more years.

Vinous Media

A wine of total precision, the 2012 Clinet possesses striking aromatic nuance and delineation. Crushed flowers, sweet raspberries, herbs and mint flesh out effortlessly, with silky, polished tannins that add to the wine's feel of graciousness. The spherical, beautifully textured finish suggests the 2012 will offer a wide drinking window of pure pleasure over the next 15-20 years. This is impressive. The 2012 is 90% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc.

Gorgeous plum cake, melted licorice and steeped currant and blackberry fruit is inlaid with notes of fruitcake and singed vanilla bean. Long and plush through the finish, with a buried charcoal spine that adds needed cut. Best from 2017 through 2027. 3,800 cases made.

Fabulous nose of orange peel, blueberries and blackberries. Full body, firm tannins and a cocoa, cedar and berry finish. Little austere now but so fine. Truly outstanding for the vintage. Better after 2016.

Barrel sample. This firmly tannic wine is solid and potentially quite complex. The structure is paramount, exhibiting substantial weight, while still hinting at the juicy fruity acidity on the finish.
