Region

Savoie

Savoie is a small, mountainous wine region in eastern France near the Alps, known for its crisp, refreshing wines. With vineyards often planted on steep slopes at high altitudes, Savoie’s cool climate preserves acidity and freshness in the wines. The region specializes in white wines made from indigenous grapes like Jacquère, Altesse (Roussette), and Roussanne (locally called Bergeron). These whites are typically light-bodied, floral, and mineral-driven, perfect with regional dishes like fondue or raclette. Red wines are lighter and savory, made from grapes like Mondeuse and Gamay. Savoie also produces traditional method sparkling wines in smaller quantities. The wines are rarely aged in new oak and are often low in alcohol, making them vibrant and food-friendly. Though lesser-known than nearby Burgundy, Savoie offers unique expressions of terroir and is gaining attention for its clean, alpine style and commitment to native grape varieties. It’s a hidden gem for adventurous wine lovers.
