The beautiful Spanish wine region of Catalunya has a history of viticulture which stretches back for over a thousand years, and has been influenced by a wide range of people who moved through the region, and brought their wine making skills and expertise with them. The region itself is a sizeable one, covering an area of sixty thousand hectares, and within this space there resides over two hundred individual wineries, ranging from small, independent and traditional ones to the larger, mass production bodegas known around the world. The terroir of Catalunya is varied, and ranges from being dry and arid, to more lush and green in the wetter parts of the region which are closer to the coast. This variation in terroir results in a fantastic range of grape varietals being grown, and a wide range of wine styles are produced within Catalunya.

The 2022 Coma Calcari is a Mediterranean Garnacha Blanca from limestone soils fermented with indigenous yeasts, with 50% of the wine in 500-liter barrels and 50% in stainless steel, where the wine matured for nine months. It's riper than the previous year, reflecting a warmer (and drier) vintage, with 14.5% alcohol. It has a showy, extroverted personality, with notes of yellow flowers and fruit, plenty of pollen and herbal tea notes, aromatic herbs and a salty/savory twist. The palate is round and lush but with refreshing chalky minerality. It's a triumph over the vintage, expressing the Mediterranean character of the year and place. 4,218 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.

Winery Notes

The “enfant terrible” of Mas d’en Gil. A salty, lively white wine. Its aroma reminds one of the forest floor and almond and peach blossom. In the mouth, it is vertically structured and very subtle, ending with a mineral side and a salty finish.
