Lots of chalky energy here, with a hint of cocoa powder to the rich, vibrant blackberries, dried herbs and graphite. Medium- to full-bodied with tightly wound tannins, offering both restrained opulence and fresh structure. Very impressive. A blend of 60% cabernet franc, 35% merlot and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Broodier than it appeared at the en primeur stage, the 2023 Chapelle d'Ausone reveals aromas of fresh licorice, gentian, dark berries and spices. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it is built around a fleshy core of fruit framed by powdery tannins, culminating in a long, perfumed finish. The blend comprises 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2023 Chapelle d'Ausone is high-class. Cabernet Franc makes up most of the blend, and yet what stands out most is the wine's exceptional balance. Silky contours add to an impression of total finesse. Crushed rose petal, cinnamon, new leather, cedar, and sweet pipe tobacco are all seamless in the glass. The 2023 is a compelling Chapelle.

Green and red berry fruit on the nose, some ripe and unripe notes with clear cedar, liquorice and cinnamon tones. Juicy and so lively on the palate, fun and lifted, clear and crunchy cranberry - a touch of bitter, tannins are present but really soft - a tiny chewiness with real freshness and menthol lift at the end. Round and complete, maybe still little shy and oak impacted but this has a good style. Juicy and clean, light in a way, this isn't rich but it has nice depth all the same. 3.62pH.

The second wine of this brilliant château, the 2023 Chapelle D'Ausone checks in as a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that was aged 20 months in new barrels. Juicy black cherries, classic chalky minerality, camphor, and graphite are just some of its nuances, and it's medium-bodied, focused, and juicy on the palate. It has fine, polished tannins, integrated oak, and ample classic Ausone character. Drink this beauty over the coming 15-20 years. Drink 2026-2045.

90-92 2023 La Chapelle d’Ausone has a bit of a toned down nose. Fresh and spicy tannins. The taste has vanilla sweetness, cherry stones and a long and warm aftertaste. In some vintages La Chapelle can be an utterly charming wine for early drinking but for the 2023 vintage a little more patience will be required.
