Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. 94-96 If the 2006 represents a 1991-ish feminine offering, the 2005 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis is a macho, masculine-styled effort. Dense, concentrated, and powerful, with gamy black currant, spice box, bacon fat, and herb notes, this chewy, tannic, enormously promising requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following two decades or more.

Consistent with prior reviews of this wine, the 2005 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis is a beauty. Cassis, toast, smoked meats, and spice aromas all show up on the nose and are followed by a medium to full bodied, beautifully layered palate that is perfectly balanced, and finishes with loads of fine-grained tannin. Still very youthful and young, give bottles another 5 to 6 years, and then drink over the following decade or longer.
