The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges is also showing brilliantly, mingling aromas of dark berry fruit, plums and cherries with nuances of baking chocolate, rich soil tones and subtle carnal nuances. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, rich and muscular, with real concentration and substance. This is a lively, sapid, broad-shouldered Les Saint-Georges that will be very long lived.

Varietal

Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Vinous Media

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru comes from a single half-hectare of vines. The beautifully defined, very precise bouquet gathers momentum with aeration, strangely reminding me of Clos des Ducs in the Côtes de Beaune; it is just magnificent. The medium-bodied palate offers filigreed tannin, perfectly pitched acidity, just the right amount of sapidity to get the saliva flowing and almost clinical definition on the persistent finish. It is everything you want in a Les Saint-Georges, brushing off the warmth of the 2018 growing season with style.

Decanter

Definitely at the riper end of the spectrum in Nuits-St-Georges in 2018, although not excessively so, this is a plush, slightly jammy expression of this famous Premier Cru site, with aromatic 30% new wood, balancing acidity and some of the grunt and grip that are typical of the terroir. The finish has commendable focus and precision. Drinking Window 2024 - 2030.

Burghound

A deft dollop of oak surrounds the liqueur-like aromas of various dark berries, forest floor, spice and sauvage nuances. There is excellent density to the sappy, textured and distinctly powerful flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also helps to partially buffer the firm and definitely grippy tannic spine on the slightly drying finish that comes up a bit short. I would make the same observation here as I made with the Les Cailles, which is to say that while this is good, I suspect that the hail damage is preventing this from being at its usual outstanding level.
