Varietal

Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Region

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Appellation

Cote Rotie

Côte-Rôtie, an esteemed appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley of France, stands as a beacon of Syrah excellence. What makes Côte-Rôtie unique is its dramatic topography, where steep terraced vineyards cling to the slopes of the Rhône River. The region's continental climate, combined with granite soils and ample sun exposure, contributes to the exceptional ripening of Syrah grapes, resulting in wines of unparalleled aromatic complexity and structure. Côte-Rôtie wines are characterized by their signature flavors of dark fruits, violets, and a distinctive smokiness. The appellation allows the co-fermentation of Syrah with a small percentage of Viognier, adding floral and aromatic dimensions to the wines. Producers like Guigal and Jamet exemplify Côte-Rôtie's commitment to tradition, crafting wines that showcase the synergy between terroir and grape variety. Exploring Côte-Rôtie offers a profound encounter with the pinnacle of Syrah craftsmanship, where the Rhône's hillsides give birth to wines of sublime beauty and complexity.

Vinous Media

Medium red. Mineral-driven aromas of red berries, cherry, Asian spices and violet display impressive clarity and vivacity, and a delicacy that is really intriguing. Light on its feet, with deeply concentrated red berry and cherry flavors and a suave floral quality. Silky in texture like a suave Chambolle-Musigny, with excellent finishing spiciness and cut. Pure and stylish.

Deep, dark red in color, the 2006 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne shows a perfumed, masculine and gamey nose of pepper meat, smoke and black raspberries intermixed with copious amounts of earth, iron and mineral aromas. The palate is medium to full bodied with dark, meaty fruit, beautiful precision and lively acidity that carries into the long finish. Balanced, clean and long, this doesn’t show the level of harmony or integration of the Côte Blonde but has more structure and depth. I’d hold for a couple years and then drink over the next 15+.

Wine Advocate

One of the three finest wines made from this great site, the 2006 Cote Rotie La Landonne boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as notes of ground pepper, smoked herbs, roasted meats, cassis, and violets. Displaying excellent fruit, medium to full body, and serious richness as well as depth, it should drink well for 10-15 years. One of the benchmark producers of Cote Rotie, Rene Rostaing’s wines are made in a classic, traditional style, and are aged in either demi-muids or small barrels, a tiny percentage of which is new. Rostaing’s 25 acres spread throughout heritage sites on the two hillsides of the Cote Blonde and Cote Brune include some of the finest vineyards of the appellation.

Lighter in style, but persistent, with tangy red currant and damson plum flavors guided by sandalwood, iron and sanguine notes. A slightly dusty edge frames the mineral- and white pepper–filled finish. Drink now through 2019. 750 cases made.
