The expectation, from our team, is to communicate to the customer the location of their purchase every step of the way.

Mixed drink in a small garden

Seed to Sip: Crafting Cocktails with Fresh Ingredients from Your Backyard

Closeup of two homemade craft cocktails

Being able to grow your own food is a wonderful thing. I start selecting my varieties and mapping out my beds in January just to be ready for the narrow window of planting the Northeast provides. Creating spreadsheets and doing research on what type of vegetable and flowers will grow the best and look the best in my small suburban backyard. This is all to be able to create a few dishes using my own ingredients and say “yeah, it was me from seed to plate.” Also, since I am a guy who loves craft cocktails, being able to have a pantry just outside my door opens up new drink possibilities I can’t find anywhere else.

Here are a few mixes that I thought really represent the taste of summer to me.

Spicy Mar“Garden”rita

On the margarita I used the G4 Blanco Tequila because of the green and spice notes. This was able to hold up to the sage which can overpower other ingredients very easily. I found that the jalapeno and sage added a great level of complexity to the traditional margarita build without taking away from the refreshing sip a margarita can provide.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Blanco Tequila
  • 1 oz Fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz Agave syrup
  • 2 slices Jalapeno
  • 2-3 Sage leaves

Instructions:

  1. Muddle jalapeno slices and sage leaves in a shaker.
  2. Add tequila, lime juice, and agave syrup.
  3. Fill the shaker with ice and shake well.
  4. Double strain into a salt-rimmed glass filled with ice.
  5. Garnish with a lime wedge and a sage leaf.

The Buzzing Gin Fizz

A gin fizz is a great summer time cocktail on the hottest of days. The addition of the thyme and bee balm adds a pleasant floral and citrus aroma. The Tanglin Orchid gin I used added some pepper notes on the palate and a soft green bitterness to balance the honey. This is a great cocktail that I should be able to swap other herbs in and experiment with other floral gin bottlings.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Gin
  • .5 oz Fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tsp. Wildflower honey
  • 3-4 Thyme sprigs
  • 2 Bee balm leaves

Instructions:

  1. In a shaker, muddle thyme sprigs, bee balm leaves, lemon juice, and honey.
  2. Add gin and fill the shaker with ice.
  3. Shake well and double strain into a chilled glass.
  4. Top with club soda.
  5. Garnish with a bee balm flower.

Having a wide variety of plants growing all around my house that not only provide beauty to my property but can also be used in a variety of ways is so much fun for me. Since all the plants come to maturity at different times I will be able to have a continuously changing menu over the next few months. I can’t wait to dig into some more unique cocktails.
