The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaumonts 1er Cru has a powerful, bold bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit mixed with rose petal and sous-bois scents. The palate is framed by firm tannins, quite saline at first, pulling back slightly from its assertive aromatics with a more streamlined, quite linear finish. This will require some cellar action for it to gain a little more weight on the back end.

The wine is perhaps initially a bit closed and less approachable, but on the palate it reveals its substantial nature, a silky, fine-grained texture and plenty of fruit that comes out on the impressive finish. With a bit of age, this should be top-notch. The virtue of Beaumonts is the elevation, particularly in a hot year. Here the 0.3ha of old vines are planted in very thin soils at the top of the slope.

The sleek, intense and beautifully well-detailed flavors exude a bracing salinity on the youthfully austere, focused and linear finish that delivers outstanding depth and persistence. This is both stylish and classy and a wine that should repay mid to even longer-term cellaring.
