The 2019 Cornas Chapelle Saint Pierre comes from the St. Pierre lieu-dit and would generally go into the Vieilles Vignes cuvée, but due to its unique character, the estate has opted to bottle it separately. The St. Pierre lieu-dit is a high-density planting from 1999 and the grapes were partially destemmed and the wine spent 20 months in used barrels. Beautiful black cherry, blueberry, cassis, exotic flower, and spice notes define the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a layered, textured mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish. It shows the ripe yet also fresh style of the vintage nicely. Hide bottles for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following 15 years or more. It’s a brilliant wine from this team I’d be thrilled to have in the cellar. There are a scant 2,500 bottles made.

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Deep magenta. Intense blueberry, incense, exotic spice, vanilla and smoky mineral qualities on the expansive, highly perfumed nose. Stains the palate with vibrant black and blue fruit, spicecake, olive and candied violet flavors that show impressive power and tension, especially in the context of a hot vintage. The floral note drives a very long, juicy finish given shape by smooth, steadily building tannins.

Compared to the Vieilles Fontaines, Voge's 2019 Cornas Chapelle Saint Pierre is slightly less impressive, although it offers more freshness and redder fruit. Hints of mint, violets and red plums mark the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and moderately concentrated. From a younger parcel planted atop the appellation and matured 20 months in only older barrels, this wine offers fine balance and drinkability but remains less profound than the Vielles Fontaines.
