A complex and layered wine that has tons of personality, the 2006 Sorella checks in as blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. It offers savoriness, wild herbs, black currants, smoked herbs, olives and earth in a deep, layered, rich and full-bodied profile. Complex and beautifully balanced, this is a gorgeous wine that has 10+ years of prime drinking ahead of it. This was an incredible showing, and while 2006 was a more difficult vintage than the more heralded 2007, this beauty matches the 2007 Sorella in terms of quality.

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. For the past couple of centuries, the United States has set about transforming much of its suitable land into vast vineyards, capable of supporting a wide variety of world-class grape varietals which thrive on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coastlines. Of course, we immediately think of sun-drenched California in regards to American wines, with its enormous vineyards responsible for the New World's finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines, but many other states have taken to viticulture in a big way, with impressive results. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

Since it began in the 1820s, wine-production in Washington state has gone from strength to strength, with many of the finest United States wines coming out over the past twenty years hailing from this region. Today, the state is the second largest US producer of wines, behind California, with over forty thousand acres under vine. The state itself is split into two distinct wine regions, separated by the Cascade Range, which casts an important rain shadow over much of the area. As such, the vast majority of vines are grown and cultivated in the dry, arid desert-like area in the eastern half of the state, with the western half producing less than one percent of the state's wines where it is considerably wetter. Washington state is famed for producing many of the most accessible wines of the country, with Merlot and Chardonnay varietal grapes leading the way, and much experimentation with other varietals characterizing the state's produce in the twenty-first century.

Tight, focused and distinctive, this sharp-edged Washington red shows ripe currant, spice, tobacco and coffee flavors that sneak up on you. They start slow, but swirl through the mildly grippy tannins into a long, expressive finish, making for a beautifully compact and complex wine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2011 through 2018. 1,326 cases made.

Proportionate and showing a lush panoply of fruits, chocolate and baking spices, it's both accessible and structured for medium-term aging. A lovely companion to the winery's Ciel du Cheval.

Chris Camarda produced his flagship wine from the oldest blocks of Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills (their average age is 30 years). It's more than two-thirds cabernet sauvignon this year, with the balance merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot. The age of the vines may account, in part, for the formidable power of this wine, brooding and distant, like a thunderhead on the horizon. For now, it reveals little beyond scents of graphite, juniper and pine, with a dark and fleshy fruit character. Give it several years for the primary fruit to mature, then serve with braised lamb.

(71% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot, 8% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot) Bright ruby-red. Higher-pitched and more perfumed aromas than the 2007: cherry, spices, lavender and white pepper. Then sweet, firm and tangy in the mouth, with firm acids framing the cherry flavor. The impression of stronger acidity gives drive to the wine, but it also displays a velvety-smooth texture and conveys a strong impression of extract. Finishes bright, long and firmly structured. The 2007 may be denser wine, but this is serious and long too: it will be interesting to compare these two vintage in six or seven years.

Winery Notes

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot from Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Sorella translates to sister in Italian, and was named after Chris Camarda's late sister Jane Camarda. Sorella has been made from 100% Champoux Vineyard fruit since it's first vintage in 1994, and represents the nature of the vineyard by highlighting the Cabernet Sauvignon, which is considered some of the best in Washington State. Vinified with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak (35% new/65% neutral) for 22 months. Bottled unfined/unfiltered and minimal so2 added.
