This is the second edition of a wine that the entire cellar team at Castello Banfi is proud to present. A lot of work, research and thinking went into the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Marrucheto. This bottle represents perhaps the most tangible conclusion of years of vineyard mapping, soil studies and cellar tweaking. This one parcel, the Vigna Marrucheto, with light brown soils rich with marina fossils and smooth stones, was singled out for its fruit purity, intensity and endurance. The wine opens to a dark, inky appearance with plenty of ripe plum followed by spice, leather and tarry smoke. Vigna Marrucheto (with 13,325 bottles released) is velvety and soft with lots of volume and depth. This hot vintage is especially characterized by that ripeness.

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. Very pretty blue fruits with crushed stone and bark as well as pine needle undertones. It’s medium- to full-bodied with firm and velvety tannins with a dusty texture. Very long and fresh with brightness and focus. Better after 2023 but already attractive and fresh for the vintage.

Sourced from three distinct plots of the 10ha Marrucheto vineyard, planted in 2009, fermented in Banfi's hybrid French oak and stainless steel tanks then matured for 30 months in French oak barrels. Gentle cherry and chocolate aromas are accompanied by touches of wood and earth. In the mouth it's grippy and dense, a black fruit character lifted by lighter red berries and clean acidity. There's plenty of complexity of damp earth, spices, new leather, tobacco and a touch of black tea, leading to a balanced finish of black cherry and spicy raspberry.

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Marrucheto is remarkably pretty, featuring raspberry and strawberry fruits complemented by sweet herbs and hints of smoke. This is a silky, polished expression, with cool-toned red berries coasting along a core of brisk acids, as rosy inner florals and hints of licorice form toward the close. While it’s structured, the energy remains high as the Vigna Marrucheto tapers off savory, spicy and long.

Winery Notes

Intense ruby red color, its bouquet is elegant and refined. The complexity of the aromas is revealed in the ripe fruity notes of red plums and white peaches. Full bodied, vibrant and taut on the palate, with considerable acidity, it has soft, well-honed tannins and a balanced finish which lingers on the palate.
